Introduction to Functional Safety – Relevance to Railways

Functional safety isn't insulation, earthing, or a factor-of-safety margin — it's the discipline of using specific safety functions to prevent and mitigate named hazards, from a train passing a signal at danger to a point moving under a train. Interlocking, automatic train protection, and level crossing gates are all functional-safety systems built around that same hazard-to-mitigation logic.

This course builds that mental model from zero: what functional safety actually means, how mechanical, relay, and electronic interlocking enforce it differently, where it shows up in real systems like ATP and door control, and how to map a specific railway hazard to the safety function that's supposed to catch it.
