At 350 km/h, a Driver Has Four Seconds to See a Signal

High-speed rail doesn't just move trains faster — it breaks the assumptions conventional signaling was built on. A trackside signal visible for 16 seconds at 90 km/h shrinks to roughly 4 seconds at 350 km/h, which is why HSR systems worldwide had to shift from line-side signals to cab-based automatic train control long before "high speed" became a marketing term.

This course covers that shift end to end: how countries define and classify high-speed rail, why conventional signaling fails past a certain threshold, and the safety architecture — ATC, fail-safe train detection, electronic interlocking, hazard and work-zone protection — that makes running trains at 250+ km/h a controlled, repeatable engineering problem rather than a risk.
