Overview
This CPD module develops detailed knowledge and practical understanding of signalling, railway control and digital systems. It examines the fundamental principles used in the design, implementation, operation, reliability and maintenance of railway control systems across mainline, high-speed, metro and tram networks.
Participants explore how signalling and digital technologies influence safety, capacity, service performance, cost, passenger comfort and environmental outcomes — and use digital analysis, modelling and simulation techniques to evaluate control functions, compare technology options and support the design of service-management systems.
Why this programme
The signalling and digital railway skills gap is now a global critical-path risk on every major rail programme.
ETCS, CBTC, moving-block, ATO GoA4 and traffic-management systems are being deployed simultaneously across mainline, metro and high-speed networks. Operators, IMs, OEMs and contractors are all short of engineers who can specify, integrate and assure these systems end-to-end — and the gap is widening every year the CPD supply lags.
Graduates of this module step into the small pool of engineers trusted to lead signalling and digital railway packages on capital programmes — the role most in-demand across the rail sector today.

Curriculum
AM frameworks with Birmingham faculty. PM application, calculations and digital modelling with industry practitioners. A capstone on Day 05 maps every theme onto a live case from participants' own systems.
Calculate railway capacity for lineside and train-based signalling systems, including absolute moving block and virtual coupling.
Analyse safety and performance of complex signalling, control and digital systems using qualitative and quantitative approaches.
Select appropriate railway-control and digital technologies, train-location and track-to-train communication systems.
Create basic digital models of railway-control systems and apply simulation to service-management functions.
Identify and develop carbon-reduction approaches for railway-control and other digital railway systems.
Select and apply an appropriate Grade of Automation for high-speed, mainline, metro and tram systems.
Methodology
Lecture is the smallest part of the module. Every framework is paired with a workshop that maps the concept onto participants' own systems — so the conversation on Monday morning is already different.
